Sirius was my first ship, as an
artificer apprentice, and I joined her shortly after she was first commissioned,
during her first work up. ( & sod's law, I left her after her second work
up.) Being a supernumery, I was vitalled in various messes: 3L stokers mess,
after seamen's mess (RPs); the greenies mess; and lastly 2K PO's mess. (Neat rum
-YES!!)
The fascinating places we visited
provoked a lifelong interest in photography. It's just unfortunate that I was no
good at it until some time after leaving Sirius, and my nice shiny Singapore
bought camera was stolen in Cape Town on the way home (where I also spent a
night in the police cells, having been bounced out of the Navigator's Den night
club, & kicked down the stairs, being returned on board by the Naval Patrol,
with 2 black eyes and a hangover.)
I have put this site up because
the Internet is a great way of sharing and finding information. I hope you find
this site interesting and useful, and maybe find shipmates you have long since
lost touch with. If you can help fill in the years since I left (March 1968)
please let me know. Photographs and stories are always welcomed.
This site is intended eventually
to become a general Sirius web site, of interest primarily to ex Sirius ships company. I have now (11.8.02) scanned and
uploaded all my slides, at least those that are worth seeing. Further
development of the site now depends on input from others - I've no more
material.
Follow up,
10.10.03. The site is now getting a life of its own, as more of you
contribute photos and information, and following another successful
reunion. Please keep them coming, to give our site even more of a
community feel. I now have broadband, so receiving photos and updating
the server is now very easy. (But editing the pages still takes time, so
please be patient if you have sent me stuff that hasn't appeared. But if
it hasn't appeared after a month, give me a nudge - my memory isn't what
it was.)
